Welcome to the web site of Augustus Roberson Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet High School. Located in the heart of Greater Augusta's (GA) medical community, A. R. Johnson has a long and storied history. The current site was originally Mauge Street Grammar School erected in 1892. In 1937 it became A. R. Johnson Junior High School and was coeducational. From 1945 - 1949 it served as a senior high school and in 1956 a new building was erected and Johnson again served as a junior high school. A. R. Johnson Health Professions High School was established during the 1980-81 school year as a pilot program using federal government funds from a Magnet Implementation/Planning Grant. With an initial enrollment of ninety-seven (97) students and thirteen (13) teachers, the school opened in September of 1980, having been renovated to meet the basic needs of our magnet program.
In 1984 the feasibility of adding an engineering program at A. R. Johnson was studies and in 1985 the engineering program was introduced, increasing program diversity and interest in the school.
